Odd Thought

The two white chairs on the back porch caught my eye as I passed the window after waking from an unintentional nap. Still groggy from sleep, I noted their positions, one slightly ahead of the other, both facing south, beyond them the gap in the trees revealing a line of light waking the eastern horizon. They reminded me of the vacant spaces in some of Hopper's paintings-- those spaces which seem curiously alive, in which something is about to happen. I half expected to see someone come and sit in one of the chairs, some total stranger who would look perfectly at home, as though he knew I had expected him.
