Gray skies remained all day, though the rain has stopped. At dusk (there was nothing that could be called a sunset) I heard geese honking, and the flapping of their wings directly over the house, but I didn't get outside quickly enough to see them. Earlier in the day I heard (or dreamed that I heard) a horses hooves clopping on the street, but by the time I had roused myself and reached the window, the street was empty. It has been a day of just missing things, some of which may have been imaginary. Tonight, the clouds must be quite thick, as the full moon is well risen, yet the light is very dim, and no pale spot appears in the dark and unvariegated roof which covers the world. |
