Reset Thirteen, Day Seven

Wednesday was supposed to be the peak of the heat, but now today is supposed to get to the same 100 degree high. The long range forecast is more promising. Over the next ten days it will gradually decline to something resembling fall, with a high of only 77 predicted for the 11th. Even more interesting, on the 9th there is a 20% chance of rain, which continues for several days thereafter. I'm not expecting any actual rain, but even the reminder that such a thing exists is pleasant.

Wednesday afternoon I heard a mockingbird for the first time in weeks. I don't know if it's the same mockingbird who was hanging around last spring, but it was nice to hear the songs again anyway. I'd have spent more time listening, but the air was bad. No aircraft were flying directly over the neighborhood, as they have been concentrating on fires in other directions. Smoke around the Zogg fire in Shasta County was too thick to allow air operations until after noon, and then I heard a number of planes headed in that direction, but they turn north before they reach this neighborhood so I never saw any of them.

The fires didn't make much headway today as the wind has died down, but neither was much headway made against them. Everything was in limbo for the last day of September. It will remain hot and dry for the next couple of days, with the cooling trend starting over the weekend, and then maybe we'll get some quicker progress in suppressing them. And there's always the chance that the odds of rain coming this month will get better. I can remember when October was one of the most pleasant months of the year in this part of the world. I guess those times are gone. I certainly don't expect to ever see them again.
