Summer Hell

I'm about to make some tacos. I have been feeling queasy and acidic a lot today, but I figured what the hell, I might as well feel crappy from eating something I enjoy instead of just for no apparent reason at all. Besides I need to use the ingredients before they get too stale. Also I intend to put some extra oil in them so they will be extra greasy, which is how I like them. I'm sure there's an old saying that covers this sort of rashness, but I can't remember it because my memory is crap anymore. In for a penny, in for a pound? I don't know.

It stayed hot so late this evening that I didn't even go out, other than spending a few minutes in the back yard now and then just to not be in the stuffy, though air conditioned, apartment. It was so hot out even at eight o'clock that I nodded off in the chair until a noisy skateboarder on the bike path woke me up again. A few leaves were rustling on a tree down the trail, but no breath of wind was stirring in my high-walled yard. There still isn't. At half past ten it is still 84 degrees in Chico. The lowest high coming up this week will be 93, and I'll have to wait until next Saturday for that, and the lowest low will be 64, that very same night. The week after that is predicted to be even hotter.

Last night (well, early today) I had a very weird dream. I was watching a guy talking on television, and his head was tilted to one side, and as I watched, his head kept tilting farther and farther until it was at right angles to where it ought to have been. I didn't hear a word he was saying because the angle of his head was freaking me out and I kept thinking does nobody else see what is happening here? I just wanted it to stop, but couldn't look away. I woke up then, so I never found out if the guy's head just kept going until it was upside down, or even had returned to its original position but with a grotesquely contorted neck. I don't want to ever have that dream again. It was creepy.

Since I didn't get out today I didn't get the rent check into the mail, but since I'd have had to get it into the box by eleven in the morning to have it picked up today, and that wasn't going to happen, and there's no pickup tomorrow, it won't be any later than it was going to be if I at least get it into the box tomorrow evening. I hope I can bring myself to get out tomorrow, and then remember to mail the letter. The heat makes it so much more difficult to go out, and there's nothing I need to get from the stores, which lessens my motivation to make the effort.

Now, tacos. I'm still feeling a bit queasy, but also fairly hungry. I think there might be extra beer tonight. If I'm going to make myself sicker I might as well make myself drunker too.
