Busy Day [Mar. 23rd, 2019|11:53 pm]

After giving me grief for a couple of hours last night J. C. Penney's web site finally quit harassing me and let my buy the stuff I wanted. I'm not sure it will fit, since I can't remember for sure what size sport jacket I wear. I had a few that burned, and need at least one for the warmer weather that's coming soon. I ordered four, in two sizes, so there's a chance at least one will be satisfactory. Very heavily discounted, so I don't think I can return any. Tonight I supplemented them with three jackets from K-mart, much cheaper but certain to fit as well as anything from K-mart.

There was drizzle this morning, but it gradually diminished and for a while it looked as though it would be sunny by noon, but then a storm cell came through. The sky became a luminous gray and then thunder began rolling. Within minutes rain was pouring down, intermittently accompanied by hail, and the thunderclaps grew louder and more frequent. Waterfalls gushed from the roof of the building, and the parking area was almost entirely flooded. It was quite spectacular, but only lasted a half hour or so. Ate that deluge the sky did clear rather rapidly, and at two o'clock I decided it would be safe to take the bus to Save Mart.

The shopping went quickly and there was plenty of time to catch the bus back to the apartment with two big bags of groceries, including pork chops, bean sprouts, a cucumber, bolillo and telera rolls, a bottle of sweet and sour sauce, romaine lettuce, Ritz crackers (though not the flavor I wanted) and a six pack of cute little eight ounce cans of Coca Cola. When I was a kid Coke came in six-ounce bottles, which everyone seemed to think quite sufficient even after Pepsi started making twelve ounce bottles. But when Royal Crown Cola began making a sixteen ounce bottle the other two followed along and by the time I was a teenager the future diabetes and obesity epidemics were assured. I was surprised when various bottlers recently began making the small cans. I suspect that a lot of people will continue buying those two liter bottles that have become standard, but I really like the idea of the small can and hope it sticks around.

After I got home I headed for Grocery Outlet to buy a box of donuts, but checked the furniture in the Goodwill store first. That pair of nice dining room chairs I've been looking at were still there, now reduced to $.99 each, which was too good a deal to pass up. I managed to get someone to give me a ride so I wouldn't have to carry them home on foot, which is a good thing since they are quite substantial and heavy. One of them ha arms and the other doesn't. I'm using th armless one at the dining table, so I don't have to move the chair at the computer when I want to eat, and the Captain's chair is in the living room, substituting for an easy chair for the time being. The place is coming close to looking livable.

We stopped at grocery Outlet on the way back and I spent more than I intended, as I often do there, and my cupboards are now more stuffed than ever. The best deal was the orange juice, as they had a buy-one-get-one-free deal on orange juice, and it was only $2.49 for two 52-ounce bottles, so I'm fixed for orange juice for the next two or three weeks. Since I saved about three and half bucks on the juice that paid for the biscoti, feta cheese spread, and Cracker Jack I hadn't intended to buy. The impulse buys of cheese dip and cinnamon oat pancake mix I had to cover myself.

So it turned out to be a busy day, and I've arranged to go to Safeway tomorrow, though I probably won't be buying very much there. There'd be nowhere to put it. And I should probably avoid going to Raley's this week. And given how much food I've got on hand I'm thinking maybe the revolution should be put on hold for the time being. We'll see how I fel about it when I run low on tiny cans of Coke.

I always thought the small cans were for use as mixers.

They likely are, but I never saw them until quite recently when they turned up at on of the supermarkets I shop at. Maybe I should spend more time in liquor stores.

I like those small cans of Coke. My grandpa always had some in the downstairs refrigerator. I rarely buy Coke anymore, but if I do, it's the small cans.

It's odd that I've never seen them until quite recently. Once in a while I've bought a bottle of Mexican Coke, which is only available because it's one of the few soft drinks still sweetened with cane sugar. Most soft drinks in the stores are either in huge bottles or bundled in multi-packs, which are always excessive for me.
