My dryer is kaput. I took out the load just dried, and found lots of little fragments of detritus in it. Thinking it was residue of something my nephew had put in there dirty, I put in the next load and took the first load into the house to fold. I shook each piece thoroughly to remove the fragments, but found that a couple of washcloths were missing, and then at the bottom of the basket I found a sock, burned. I mean seriously burned, so it was half gone.

I went out and stopped the dryer and took out the second load, still wet. It was terribly hot. I looked inside the drum using a flashlight and found that the missing washcloths were stuck to the side of the drum, and had burn marks on them. I don't know what has gone wrong, but it is clearly major. I don't know if attempting to get it repaired will be worthwhile. It's a very old dryer. But it is clearly a fire hazard, so I'll have to stop using it. Most likely it will have to be replaced, just as the washing machine had to be replaced late last year. It's going to cost a bundle. Again.

Anyway, at least I have something other than weather to write about for once. I wish it was something else, though.

Bummed.

Is the drum turning?
It could just be the belt if it's not. If it's the belt, it's about $20.00 for a replacement and maybe an hour and a half of labor.

The drum still turns. The nephew thinks the vent might be clogged, since it's had a dryer attached to it since the house was built (around 1960), and the heat is just backing up in the dryer. The dryer itself is about thirty years old, so its gas burner might just be worn out and making too much heat.

Those vents need constant supervision, after 30 years I'd wager you'll need a replacement hose, to say the least!
Good luck...
