Plagued

There's been a sudden population explosion of some sort of small flies in my yard. They are plaguing the feral cats. Apparently the residue left on the cats fur when they groom themselves is appealing to these flies, so the insects hover around and alight on the cats, who then twitch and bite, trying to dislodge the unwelcome guests. The cats probably welcome the cool, fly-free evening even more than I do.

The flies leave me alone (probably because I don't lick myself after eating), but the ants don't. There was another infestation in the kitchen this morning, and I had to spend several minutes hunting them down, spraying them with Formula 409 (because I've run out of Windex) and wiping up the corpses with a paper towel. It's a ritual I could do without. I'd put out some sort of chemical barrier against the bugs, but I can't find where they are coming in at. In fact today's infestation seemed to have no line to or from it. It was just a bunch of them clustered on certain parts of the sink board. I wonder if they have found hollow places under the tiles and colonized them? Disturbing thought.

Tomorrow is predicted to be the peak of the current heat wave, with a high of 94 and a low of 71. I don't look forward to it. I am looking forward to next Thursday, when there is supposed to be a high of 86 and a low of 63. Not too dismal, but Thursday is a long time to wait.

No shopping arranged for tomorrow. It looks like I'll be going on Sunday again. Well, at least it will be four degrees cooler than tomorrow, if the forecast is correct. I'd be willing to bribe somebody to make it even cooler. Any gods around who want favors? Poseidon? Anybody?
