There was a bit of sun today, and I got out to buy a few things at Grocery Outlet. I bought things I usually buy because I desperately want something familiar in my disrupted world. Later everyone went sway to some event and I had the house mostly to myself for about seven hours. It is the first quiet time I've had in over two weeks, and I took advantage of it by being very quiet myself. Even my nephew's hyper Boston terrier, who was my only companion for about five hours until the nephew came and fetched him, was uncommonly quiet. He's a smart dog.

Tomorrow I intend to go back to Kmart to return the defective shaver and order a replacement, and also order some pants and shoes and washcloths the store doesn't have in stock. Of the three pairs of pants I brought away (including the pair I was wearing) only one really fits well, and I need those additional tow pair. Also the shoes I was wearing are near the end of their usefulness.

This evening I heard a horrifying story. A couple my brother in law knows were trapped in the road by the fire, just a short distance behind the place where we were when we had to abandon the car and run. By the time they and the other people near them had to abandon their cars it was too late for them to run. Firefighters herded the group into a new commercial building nearby that had not quite been finished, then called in the water-dropping helicopters to drop water on the structure while everything around it burned. They all survived the harrowing experience, and were eventually evacuated, but I expect they will have some really nasty PTSD, and undoubtedly some health issues from all the smoke they inhaled. Had we been two minutes later getting out of my house we probably would have been in that group.
