Demon Sun

Not a leaf stirs in the still, sultry air of evening. I managed to get to the stores a bit earlier than usual, and so to miss the very worst late afternoon heat, but it was still borderline hellish out there. I got home and downed about a quart of iced lemonade, and ran out of ice. Oh, the lack of forethought! I ought to have refilled the empty trays last night.

But Rite Aid had its Thrifty brand ice cream on a two-for-one sale, so I snagged some pistachio and some chocolate malted crunch, which will be nice to have over the next few days. The air conditioning in the stores was nice, too. I haven't turned mine on yet, as the house hasn't quite hit eighty degrees, and now probably won't tonight, the sun having hidden itself in shame behind the trees.

I might turn the machine on for a while very early in the morning to give an assist to the night air that will come in through the windows, which I probably won't be able to open until nightfall. Runningthe air conditioning for an hour or so at four o'clock in the morning should give the house a head start on tomorrow's heat, and then I might be able to leave it off until late in the day.

Today is an even-numbered day and so I'm allowed to water, so at eight o'clock I'm going to go give part of the yard a drink. The jasmine will get some, though so few blossoms are left on it that I doubt it will grow more this year no matter how much I irrigate it. I like the jasmine flowers to last at least until the end of June, but this year it looks like they won't. The mild spring made them bloom too early. Now they are like child stars rotting into old age much too soon.

There remain four more days such as this to endure, and then it will cool off, though perhaps for just a short time. July probably has torrid nightmares in store for me, and I don't even want to think about August. In fact I'd like to hibernate until October. But it's much too hot to sleep.
