Maybe Next Time

The skunk is back tonight, but the smell isn't as strong as it was a few nights ago. I'm glad it wasn't around last night when I was looking for meteors. I actually only saw a couple of faint streaks. The problem is that the trees are a lot bigger than they were last time I had a good night for watching the Perseid shower.

Then, the walnut tree had been recently trimmed back, but now it is huge again and blocks most of the big patch of sky I could once see from the end of my back yard. Also the oak and the conifers next door have gotten several feet taller. How they manage to grow so much during a prolonged drought I don't know, but there is only a narrow stretch of sky still visible to me. I don't know why I hadn't noticed that.

Anyway, I only stayed out for half an hour at first, and intended to go out again later when the meteors were supposed to be higher in the sky, and more frequent, but my lack of sleep caught up with me and I conked out on the couch not long after midnight. So, pretty much a bust this year. I didn't even remember to look at the web site that was streaming the view.

There are photos at (which says it was the best meteor shower in years,) but it's not the same thing. I might try again tonight, though the peak was last night, but the trees haven't gotten any smaller so I'm not expecting much luck. I'd try the front yard, which has a slightly larger view, but the next door neighbors have gone away and left their front porch light on again, and I don't like snatching bulbs. They might come home and break a neck in the dark, and it might be mine.
