The soil began sweating out the dampness left by the rain as soon as the sun got high today. It was a muggy morning, and it's still somewhat muggy this evening. The roses are looking quite bedraggled, and almost every jasmine blossom is gone. Even the gardenia bush suffered, though it was protected from the worst of the rain by the eaves of the house. Today was not hot enough to get the house up to a temperature that would make me uncomfortable, but tomorrow probably will be, and early next week I will be dealing with temperatures over 100 degrees. At least the 113 that was predicted for Tuesday has been downgraded to a mere 104. I'm not happy about it, but I can probably avoid becoming a victim of spontaneous human combustion.

A feral cat has brought three kittens about five or six weeks old into my back yard. So far, the other feral cats are tolerating them, but I don't know how long that will last. It looks like I'm in for another round of cat neutering. The kittens won't come near me, but stare at me from a distance. Their mom knows that I have food, but so far the kittens have no idea where that tasty, crunchy stuff in the bowl comes from. I doubt that there's much chance of socializing these little beasts so they could be adopted into somebody else's home, and I certainly don't have the stomach for getting rid of them, so I might be stuck with another generation of cats in my yard. Portia will be livid as soon as she sees them, I'm sure.

Sleeping was difficult last night, and I ended up getting into a position that left my shoulder very sore. One day after getting and adjustment I'm already well on the way to screwing it up. As the nights get hotter, sleep will become even more difficult, and there is bound to be lots of twisting and turning, which is never good for my back. I'll have to decide if it's better to pay for a bit of air conditioning, or to pay for extra appointments with the chiropractor.

If I yawn any more I'll split at the ears. Maybe I'll skip dinner tonight and just have a nap.
