The feral kittens are getting too big for the chair on the back porch, but they all sleep there anyway. The chair is one of those aluminum framed canvas things with open sides and just a strap for the back, so it's rather exposed. They used to sleep in a row when they were smaller, but if they try that now they hang off the edges of the chair, so they have begun sleeping in a heap. One always gets the other two as blankets, and over the course of the night they trade places. |
It would be nice if I could get them a slightly bigger chair— maybe one with a full back and arms, to give them a bit of protection on windy nights— but then they seem to like being able to look out and see the entire yard without getting up. And anything upholstered would get nasty in wet weather. I'm not sure they'll keep sleeping in the chair when the serious winter weather arrives. They might be willing to come indoors to sleep once they've experienced a few icy nights, although that would probably lead to issues with Portia. There'd be no problem if cats weren't so territorial. Maybe I should get a dog who has been trained to break up cat fights.
Well, I won't have to worry about it getting too cold for cats for the next few nights, at least. They got through last night, and tonight is at least five degrees warmer, and the next few nights will be warmer still. When December gets here, then I'll have something to worry about.
