Getting Through July [Jul. 28th, 2008|04:38 pm]
I always chuckle when I see a Webcor Builders sign, because Webcor was the name of a company that made record players. The first record player I owned was a table model Webcor changer of about 1958 vintage (with vacuum tubes!), but its changer workings were very like those of an older Webcor which can be seen playing in this YouTube video.

I'd considered getting one of their suitcase models, like the one in this video, but decided that the pricier ($110.00, if I recall) table model in blond wood looked a lot nicer. Now I can't even remember what became of it after I moved on to a more sophisticated stereo system. Gee, if I'd lugged that Webcor around with me for the last few decades, now I could probably sell it on eBay for twenty or thirty inflated dollars!

It's been another breezy afternoon, but the breezes have been hot. The sere fields and woodland undergrowth are probably crackling with exploding seed-heads, but my yard features only the rustling of drying leaves. The gray cat visited by daylight, seeking the water I leave out. The air smells arid, and I fear it may not cool as much tonight as it lately has. I'm sure the cats will visit many times before morning. In the meantime, I think I'll water the jasmine again. That, at least, remains green.

Here's an engaging YouTube bonus I just discovered: A Polish version of "La Paloma", recorded in 1934 by Adam Aston (born Adolf Loewensohn.) The Polish lyric has nothing to do with the original Spanish— not unusual for the multitude of interpretations in various languages of this 19th century Habanera so popular and enduring that one German record company has issued a four volume CD set containing over 100 different recordings of it, some dating back to the beginning of the 20th century.

I have watermelon!
