Another day almost exactly like yesterday, but very slightly warmer. I think maybe two degrees more will make the house too hot.

Twice this month I've had hummingbirds fly right up to me and inspect my head. I think they must both have been this year's fledglings, as yet unable to tell the difference between flowers containing tasty nectar and ears near hair that smells faintly of White Rain Shampoo. At least they both kept their beaks out of my ears. The beating of their wings sounds very intense that close, though.

I keep finding oddities on YouTube. My latest discovery is a clip from the 1930 movie musical "King of Jazz" featuring (no, not Louis Armstrong) Paul Whiteman and his orchestra, with some of the songs sung by warbling matinee idol John Boles (minus the pencil-thin moustache he sports in some of his other films, such as the original "Back Street" in which he co-stars with Irene Dunne.) The particular clip from "King of Jazz" to which I link is quite fetchingly strange. What this particular song has to do with jazz I don't know, but neither do I know what, exactly, it has to do with cowboys. Boles performs it with a chorus of about sixty or seventy guys, all of them in drugstore cowboy drag and, thanks to an early two-strip Technicolor process, sporting lurid pink shirts! This was definitely not Boles' finest moment (nor Paul Whiteman's), but is it ever cheesy fun. Behold Song of the Dawn!
