When excited about something, raccoons often grunt and squeal, sounding much like small pigs. Last night, I heard a raccoon fight going on some distance away. For such small beasts, they certainly can be loud. A few times, raccoon fights have taken place in my yard, and the racket is astonishing, and startling, especially when it suddenly bursts out of a quiet night. Distance made it less startling tonight, but it was still a disturbing thing to hear. Raccoons are mean to each other! They have some nasty claws on them, too. I was relieved when the fight ended- if it was a fight. Maybe they were just mating (shudder.)

I prefer hearing the barking of the squirrels, even if they are the most disgustingly cheery and cute creatures. They haven't shown up yet this morning, but I expect them at any time. They have a suitably bright, cheery day ahead of them. May they enjoy it, and avoid becoming roadkill. I have dark and moody dreams ahead of me, I hope. Maybe there'll be licorice in them. I dreamed about licorice a while back, which I was eating in a dusty, deserted theatre. I need more dreams about food.

So, I thought was just about to find out why there was a hot dog stand inside somebody's huge house I'd broken into when someone began yelling something about a black labrador, and I woke up to hear a loud discussion between new neighbor and some passerby who was displeased that new neighbor's dog had done something like run in front of passerby's car. I heard only fragments, which mingled with fragments of the dream, which may in fact be the reason the house I'd broken into had a hot dog stand in it.

My confusion displeased me, though less than did the fact that even after the loud discussion had ended, new neighbor's activities so near my window prevented me from fully returning to sleep. After about an hour of slipping in and out of a doze, I finally got up, only to find that there were no oranges. Oranges! They're what's for breakfast! But not today. Today I had to make do with carrot juice. So, not enough sleep, an unfinished dream, and no orange. I've been out of sorts ever since. All I can say is that it better be quiet tomorrow, and there damned well better be an orange when I wake up.

Other than that, the day has been fine, I guess. I mean the house hasn't caved in, the electricity hasn't gone off, I have been neither frozen nor broiled, and I got a fairly decent Internet connection fairly quickly (which hasn't been the case for the last couple of days.) I suppose I won't kill myself. I sure miss that orange I didn't get though. I think I might have an addiction.

Time to go out and listen to crickets in the dusk.
