After the Rain

When the moon is at or near the full on a cloudy night, the light is suffused throughout the sky, and everything is evenly illuminated. Houses, trees, pathways, flowers, telephone poles, all are distinctly visible, all are shadowless. This would be a good night to see deer, but none have appeared, so I enjoy the enduring dusk alone. From time to time, a thin place in the cloud cover will reveal a few stars, or, if it happens to cross the moon, will reveal the speed of the high winds. There is something comforting in the stillness here when I see how fast the clouds are moving. Remarkable, that such force can co-exist with such calm.

Little Buggers

There may or may not be kids coming to the door tonight. One never knows in this town. There are only two kids who live on this block, and a handful more in the surrounding neighborhood. Some years, there will be an influx from other neighborhoods, and some years nobody shows up at all. Most people on this block don't even bother with Halloween anymore. But in the area to the east, there are more kids and many houses have been decorated for days now. That may prove to be enough of an attraction to keep this block quiet.

In any case, it is going to be rather chilly tonight. It always is, after a cold front passes through. But the clouds today were absolutely stunning- a mixture of big white cumulus and feathery cirrus, reflected in the pools of rainwater which have collected in the fields. I always enjoy the first clear day after an autumn rainstorm.

By the way...

Tonight is a blue moon. You know, the second full moon in a particular month. This is the first blue moon to fall on Halloween in almost half a century. I just thought that was interesting. I don't think it portends anything in par... aachccchh urrg ergg....
