Reboot [Feb. 22nd, 2016|08:37 pm]
rejectomorph
I updated my copy of Opera today and now it opens certain web pages that it hasn't been able to open for a long time, and visiting them pretty much devoured my whole day. Well, my whole afternoon, anyway, as I slept through most of the first half of the day. It's finally sunny again, but still pleasantly cool. The windows were open for about two hours, and nobody had a fire going nearby so the air was fresh.

The house will stay fresh, too, until the next time Portia uses the litter box, which I'm sure will be soon. I haven't even thought about dinner yet, and my blood sugar is in rapid decline. I guess I should go eat something before I crash into the floor. It would have been a good idea to put a potato in to bake. Too late now. It will probably end up being a can of something that will heat rapidly.

Oh, wheelie bin night. Must remember to put them out.

I hope I can reboot my brain tomorrow.

Hooray for the updated Opera that opened pages! Hope you found something tolerable to heat & eat.

The worst part of Opera's recalcitrance was that one of the main web sites it stopped cooperating with was the Internet Archive, which I use all the the time. When I wanted to use IA I had to fire up one of the other browsers. Firefox is incredibly clunky, and while when it or Opera crashes I only have to restart the browser, when Chrome crashes it causes the computer to reboot, which takes forever, so I hate using Chrome.

I'm glad Opera decided to provide an update. I wasn't expecting it because I have Opera 12, which they no longer support (all versions of Opera after 14 are actually based on Chrome, which is one reason I've never downloaded one of them. I expect that I'd have the same crash problems with Chrome-based Opera on this computer that I have with Chrome itself.)

I like Chrome as a browser, but what's weird is that it frequently crashes my Chromebook -- saying the browser is incompatible! How?!

One of the reasons I've long preferred Opera is that (for me, at least) it has been the most stable browser I've ever used. Even now it crashes only occasionally, and for the first few years I had this computer I think Opera only crashed two or three times. Now it's about twice a month.

Chrome is slick and fast, but the several minutes it takes for my computer to reboot after a Chrome crash (which on this computer is about every third time I use Chrome) wipes out any time I save from Chrome opening pages a bit faster than Opera.

After one of the Chromebook crashes, I'll have to re-enter all my passwords. That's a pain. A couple of days ago, it insisted I restart to update. When I got back on, not only did I have to re-enter the passwords, but the saved ones were all old, from before the last time I changed them for security. It's disappointingly glitchy!
