This evening, though the heat remains oppressive, we are at least getting a bit of breeze. It has been so still of late that I'd begun thinking the air had forgotten how to move. It's nice to sit on the back porch and listen tot he leaves rustling again, even though I can't hear them very well while any nearby air conditioners (especially my own) are running. There is some slight chance that later tonight it will get cool enough that I'll be able to turn the machine off and open the windows and use only the fan. I might have been able to do so for a while last night, but unfortunately I fell asleep before it got that cool, and by the time I woke up this morning it was already so warm out that there was no point.

The sunset was quite strange. Some trick of the light and the configuration of the clouds made the east brighter than the west, and the lurid orange of the sky there made it seem as though the sun was rising instead of setting. The sunset light is gone now, but the darkened clouds are emitting occasional flashes which must be lightning, though so far I've heard no thunder. A storm could be on the way,t hough, so I'm going to shut down the computer. This would be a terrible time to lose power. Without the air conditioner the house will start getting hotter again as the heat trapped in the attic makes its way down. That's about the last thing I'd want.
