More Swelter

Well, I finally had to pull the trigger and turn on the air conditioner today, thus shooting my budget in the head. By sunset the house had gotten up to 84 degrees, and it was still hotter outdoors, so I set the thermostat to 80 and turned the damned thing on. There's no telling how long it will have to stay on. After three hours it's still warmer outside than it is in here, so maybe it will have to be on all night, and tomorrow, and beyond. Now that I've gotten used to being only slightly too warm I doubt I'll be able to go back to being miserably hot. It's going to be getting into the nineties all week, and will probably get hotter after that. It's times like this I really miss having the ocean nearby.

There might be pipe leaking somewhere in my kitchen. I keep smelling a smell like wet wood. It isn't under the sink, as that cupboard doesn't smell damp. It might be under the old dishwasher that hasn't been used for years but is still hooked up to the water. Something in the line might have worn out with age and sprung a leak. I'll probably have to pull the machine out of its cubbyhole to check, but I can't do that until I've got somebody here to help. Preferably somebody who knows plumbing, so just in case something pulls loose and starts leaking seriously I won't be on my plumbing-challenged own. Even if I weren't plumbing-challenged I still wouldn't be smart to try pulling the thing out myself. My chiropractor is going on vacation and if I threw out something in my neck or back I'd just have to live with it until he got back.

It's supposed to get down into the mid-sixties tonight, but it certainly doesn't feel as though it will. The night air is feeling downright tropical. I keep listening for the sound of palm fronds rustling, but all I hear is oak and walnut leaves, and those rarely as there is very little breeze tonight. It's going to be hard to sleep tonight, even with the air conditioner on. I just hope I can get enough rest that I'll feel like going shopping tomorrow. Right now I feel like standing under the shower for a while, but I won't. When it's this warm I never get completely dry after a shower, and that would just make things worse.

Why is there no way to cancel summer?
