Passing

The sun is up to its old tricks, desiccating the lawns and driving me to seek shade whenever I go outside. It hasn't yet made me turn on the air conditioner this week, but it probably will on Saturday. The good news is that I got my utility bill and it was less than I'd expected, considering the amount of electricity I used during the heat wave. Maybe I can afford to keep the house below 80 this weekend after all. We're in for more warm nights following hot days, so the house won't have a chance to cool down with just the fan and the open windows. There's no telling how bad it's going to get later in the month, though, so I still can't afford to be extravagant. I eagerly await the first day the temperature peaks below seventy degrees. Then I will celebrate.

The sourgrass is almost entirely dried out now, and the gardenias are all brown. Instead of perfume, the air now smells of pine resin and dry grass. The house is just stuffy all day. Night brings some relief, and even the dry yard smells a bit better once I've watered the surviving plants. It's a tedious time, though, getting through July. The heat overcomes me about four o'clock every afternoon now, and I fall asleep on the couch. I don't remember any dreams from those naps, but I'm sure they are no more pleasant than being awake would be. I wake up more groggy than rested. I'm drinking way more water than my kidneys want to handle. But the first third of summer will be over within a few days, and half will be gone in less than three weeks. I can always hope that we'll get some rain for September. But I won't count on it.
