After raking about half the leaves on the back lawn my left shoulder started hurting, so I abandoned the job. Maybe I'll be able to finish it tomorrow or Monday. If I don't get the leaves into the bin before Tuesday, it will probably be too late to keep them from getting soaked. A soaked pile of leaves is much worse than soaked leaves scattered about. Getting piled leaves dry involves un-piling them so they can get some sunlight and air. I'd rather not do that. |
If the season continues to be as rainy as it's been so far, I might end up with a big pile of half-finished compost in the middle of the lawn next spring. The pile will have to be moved from its current position before then, though, as it is right atop the leach lines for the septic system. The weight of a huge heap of soggy leaves could be too much for them. The leach field very near the end of its life as it is.
I avoided any unintentional napping today, but now I'm getting sleepy much too early in the evening. I must make dinner soon, and I don't dare fall asleep while dinner is in the oven. Burnt macaroni and cheese is a terrible thing. Not only does it make cleaning the baking dish a nightmare, but the whole house will reek. Maybe I should just open another can of beans instead of attempting to use the oven. They heat up fast.
The leaves that are still on the trees are looking nice, but most of their color will be fading on the ground within a week or so. The street is now turning red-gold with all the dead pine needles that have fallen on it, but they will soon be pulverized by passing cars, and then the pavement will return to its normal gray. Dull times ahead. The best part of autumn is just about gone, and winter is bearing down.
Well, now I've depressed myself. I'd better start dinner before I make it even worse.
