Sleepy, Dopey, Grumpy, and Sneezy, But Still No Snow White

Waking up at five o'clock in the evening really messes up my schedule. I end up not getting dinner until eight or nine, and then it usually ends up being something I hadn't planned. Tonight I just made grilled cheese and opened a can of soup about eight o'clock, since I didn't feel like going to the trouble of baking the fish I'd intended to have. Fish just isn't right so soon after waking up. I guess I'm lucky I'm not Jewish. I'd scandalize my relatives by refusing to eat bagels and lox with cream cheese for breakfast. It makes a great late night snack, though.

The expected drizzle never materialized today, but the sky was overcast, which is probably one reason why I overslept. The other reason I overslept was because my first sleep shift last night lasted from one in the morning until just after five, so the second shift didn't start until noon. I think I actually woke up briefly just after three o'clock in the afternoon, but I misread the clock as quarter past one, so I went back to sleep. Portia tried to wake me up, but she wasn't persistent enough. She ought to have jumped on me and stuck her cold, wet nose in my face the way Sunni used to do when I overslept.

It looks like the shifting weather pattern that prevented today from being drizzly is now going to turn Friday downright balmy. It could be in the mid-seventies. That's going to be windows open all afternoon and into the evening weather. It's going to be April in February. I'll start craving watermelon before the plants have even blossomed. I'll probably start sneezing more, too, because another warm spell is bound to stimulate pollen production the local weeds and grasses. A few inches of snow would put an end to that for a while, but there's not much chance we'll get any.

Tonight it's still cool, though, and the moderately-pollinated air is fresh. A few rainless clouds are still drifting about, but the moon is on its last crescent and won't be rising until near dawn, so the clouds are barely visible except as places where there are no stars. It would be a good night to watch for meteors, if any significant showers were expected. They aren't, alas. Two or three an hour can't coax me out of a warm house, especially when they are so fast that I'm likely to miss all of them, or at best catch sight of them only from the corner of my eye. I'll just watch television, thanks.
