Falling

Another day full of sun and chilly air. The dogwood trees are finally getting enough red in them to look like autumn, while the oaks have already lost half their leaves, which have long since turned brown. The mulberry remains mostly green, and the walnut tree has barely begun to go yellow. Autumn is scattered, rather like my thoughts. I'm still not accustomed to the short evenings. Dinner seems late, and it feels like midnight long before midnight arrives. In between is that big empty space I don't know what to do with. It is too cold to go out and watch the stars, but I don't feel like staring at a television or a computer screen. In short, not my favorite time of year. I almost wish it would snow, just for the change.

I think I'll go wake the cat up and make her purr at me.
