I totally forgot to watch the Orionid meteor shower Friday night-Saturday morning. I suppose there could be a few meteors tonight, but the night before last was the peak. It would have been decent viewing conditions, too, since the moon wasn't up until late that night, and there were no clouds. It wasn't even very cold. I think I fell asleep on the couch that night, and Portia got left outside for hours. I wonder if she saw the meteors? Probably not. Cats don't seem to pay much attention to the sky, unless there's a bird in it they'd like to eat.

The new weatherstripping on the doors is going to get a workout tonight. The temperature will probably drop into the high forties. Other than the nocturnal chill, and the increasing numbers of leaves strewn about, it seems less like autumn than I'd expected. The rain turned the lawns entirely green, and the sourgrass which had dried up for several weeks has put out new stalks tipped by small purple flowers. This afternoon was so balmy that the house seemed cold by comparison. I was unable to leave the windows open long enough to capture much of the warmth, though, as I had to go shopping. Hopefully the attic will have heated up enough to keep the house from getting too cold tonight. I'll bet the rats who probably live in the attic insulation are cozy.

I bought brownie mix at the store but forgot that I'm out of eggs. I'll have to settle for cookies until I can get back to the store. It's times like these that I wish I had a couple of chickens. Or that feral cats could lay eggs.

Sunday Verse

in time of daffodils(who know

by ee cummings

in time of daffodils(who know
the goal of living is to grow)
forgetting why,remember how

in time of lilacs who proclaim
the aim of waking is to dream,
remember so(forgetting seem)

in time of roses(who amaze
our now and here with paradise)
forgetting if,remember yes

in time of all sweet things beyond
whatever mind may comprehend,
remember seek(forgetting find)

and in a mystery to be
(when time from time shall set us free)
forgetting me,remember me
