The Buzz [Sep. 29th, 2011|08:00 pm]

A leaf hopper got into the house this afternoon. I only discovered it because Portia was stalking it. It had taken refuge under a piece of furniture, and the cat was swatting it it. It suddenly flew out and landed on the window drape. I swatted at it a couple of times myself, and it flew to the window and landed on the screen. When I opened the screen an inch, the leaf hopper took off and escaped the house, and escaped Portia as well, though she made a final lunge at it.

Leaf hoppers are apparently smarter than flies. It usually takes quite a while for a fly to find its way out through an open screen, and sometimes they never figure it out. This leaf hopper knew exactly how to get outside the minute the opportunity arose.

It appears that we'll be having a chance of rain from Sunday night through Thursday, with rain likely both Tuesday and Wednesday. It's going to get considerably cooler, too. This could turn into one of those wet, chilly autumns. That would be good for keeping the water bill down, but the gas bill could rise rapidly, and gas is way more expensive than water. I'm going to launder all my hoodies and heavy blankets before the cold front arrives.

Today there was no sign of approaching cold weather, though, and there even appeared to be a bit of new growth on the jasmine hedge. If it were not going to turn chilly, I wouldn't be surprised to see a couple of new blossoms in a few days. Only two old blossom clusters remain, and they are just about scent-free. But lack of scent doesn't stop the bees from visiting them. I almost got my nose stung this afternoon. I really need to get new glasses. I didn't even see the bee as I bent toward the flowers to sniff them. The bee certainly saw me, though, and I nearly tripped over a kitty as I stepped back when the bee flew at me. Fortunately, all three of us escaped injury. I guess that makes it a good day.

So that's what a leaf hopper is.

Now that I think about it, it was probably too big to have been a leafhopper. I think it must have been a katydid.
