Events

It rained a bit yesterday morning, but I slept through it. I woke to a damp newspaper and dark patches of wet soil remaining in spots shaded by shrubs. Even this afternoon, when I raked the back lawn, bright drops of water occasionally flew from the undersides of leaves as I turned them. Today a guy came to see about patching the roof over the den where it leaks every winter. I don't have a cost estimate yet, but I'm sure it won't be cheap. It's going to put a big dent in my remaining cash, but it will be cheaper than having an entire room rot off of the house.

The days will be warmer this week, though some clouds will remain. They probably won't bring any rain. They will most likely be the sort of fluffy white clouds that are so enjoyable to watch as they drift across a bright blue sky. I anticipate these days with pleasure; the chilly nights between them, not so much.

This afternoon Farah went into the front yard to avoid the gray and white tom cat (Tommy Two-Tone!) and ended up meeting Portia, who had been sunning herself there. After a brief contretemps, which I interrupted by shouting at them from my window, Farah jumped the fence into the neighbors' back yard, and Portia returned to the garage. When I went to the back yard to see what Tommy was up to, I found that Alger was there, and the pair of them were glaring at one another. I had to run Tommy off, as it looked as though a fight could break out.

But this is the first time I've seen Alger hold his ground when Tommy came into the yard. He must be getting more confident. I have mixed feelings about that. Alger does need to be more confident, to defend himself from other feral tom cats, but I really don't want him to get in the habit of fighting. If he develops a taste for it, he's bound to be injured eventually. He could also become a threat to Portia when she goes outside. I can't be watching them all the time.
