Aging [Oct. 15th, 2009|10:29 pm]
A couple of hardy cicadas are still buzzing down the block, un-drowned and sounding none the worse (nor none the better, alas) for the recent cold nights. They must be ensconced in grassy spots above septic system leach lines, taking advantage of the warmth rising into the ground from waste water. I guess it's not surprising, given that warmth from my neighbor's leach lines keep one of my gladiolus plants blooming much of the winter. It's a bit irritating to have that aural reminder of summer persisting so far into autumn, though. I'd prefer to have a cricket or two surviving, rather than the cicadas and their monotonous song.

The sun only came out late this afternoon, so the oak leaves have remained too wet to rake up. The fruitless mulberry tree has begun shedding as well, and its huge leaves take even longer to dry than do the smaller leaves of the oaks. There might be another storm before they dry enough to be cleared away. I could rake them while they are wet, of course, but that condition makes them extremely unpleasant to deal with. I guess I'll let them rot a while yet.

The feral cats had oak leaf tea to drink today. I was kept so busy that I didn't have time to change the water in their big bowl, and several oak leaves had fallen into it. The leaves are actually a pretty sight floating in the water, surrounded by reflected sky, and I suppose it won't hurt the cats to get a bit of oak in their diet. It certainly doesn't hurt the squirrels.

I forgot to mention yesterday that my dad turned 100. He didn't do much for his birthday but nap. If I were to survive that long I'd probably want to do nothing but nap either. In fact I wouldn't mind a nap right now.

Congratulations Flying Blind Senior! Is there any American custom like we have, where you get a telegram from the Queen when you reach the big C?

I think Americans are supposed to get a telegram from Cher, but it didn't arrive.

43? In the daytime? If that keeps up, the kids in your neighborhood will all have to dress as Arctic explorers or abominable snowmen for Halloween.

I think it's about 75 here today. Everybody's out using their leaf blowers and lawn mowers.
