Going outside to check if it has cooled off enough that I could turn off the air conditioner and open the windows, I was expecting the usual summer night scent of pine resin and dry grass. Instead there was a strange smell like a combination of sandalwood, grapefruit zest, and overheated Campbell's vegetable soup. Had I not already had dinner I'd have lost my appetite.

A second kitten is getting brave, and the first one is getting braver. The first one came right onto the porch while I was sitting there this afternoon, and didn't even bother to stare at me. It was less then ten feet away. The second kitten stayed on the grass, about fifteen feet distant, and kept a close eye on me. The third kitten peeked at me from the end of the jasmine hedge, and withdrew when I looked directly at it. All three are perfectly happy to come on the porch and look at me when I appear at a window.

Aside from the periodic hum of the air conditioner, this is a very quiet (if smelly) night, with not a leaf rustling and only a single cricket chirping. I hope a breeze arrives eventually, or the night will never cool off.

Time to let Portia (aka Garage Cat) into the back room, lest gray cat come and beat her up while I'm in the shower.
