Another storm made of fail! There've been a few false starts, when fat drops of rain have made a brief drumming on the parched ground, but then the stillness has returned. My disappointment is great. As much as I enjoy the chirping crickets, the sound of steady rain would please me far more. As much pleasure as the jasmine-scented air brings, the smell of wet trees and grass and dirt would be more pleasurable still. Only four more days of clouds and coolness are predicted, and then the unencumbered sun will bring a rising heat. I will continue daring to hope, but should these clouds not do as they were expected to do I will call this storm Barack.
The kitties are more reliable than the weather. Though the black and white cat did not appear last night, she arrived in timely manner this evening. For the first time since she has been coming here I saw her some distance from the house, and she did not arrive from the south as I had thought she would, but from across the street. Perhaps she lives on the next street over. I know she doesn't live in the house across the street or its neighbor to the north, and it's unlikely she would live in the house on the corner, which is inhabited by people who would not leave a cat out at night. She continues to be a puzzle.
The stripped cat continues to occupy the back yard with her kittens. They are steadier on their legs each day, and engage in much play fighting. She leaves them alone for longer periods of time now. Last night she was gone for about two hours while the kittens slept in a heap on a patch of lawn a few feet from my bathroom window. I kept an eye on them in her absence. I don't know how far she went, but I didn't want them to have to confront a raccoon or a tom cat while she was too far to return swiftly. I'll be glad when they're a bit older an better able to fend for themselves.
Internet amusement: Calcio Fiorentino is a relative of football which has been played in Florence for several centuries. Here's an interesting video, an excerpt from a documentary as far as I can tell, with some characteristic scenes of a game. It's in Italian. There are other Calcio videos on YouTube, but most of those I've looked at have added sound tracks of American rock music, which I find singularly inappropriate. Curse you, Rocky!
Oh, thunder! Maybe a storm after all! But must shut down computer in case of power failure! |
