The moon begins the year almost full (January will miss having two full moons by only one day) and the sky being clear the night is all sharp contrasts and hard shadows. I can't get used to the picket fence across the street. It replaced an earlier picket fence a few months ago. Both fences were white and thus dominant features of moonlit nights, but the old fence had pickets about as wide as the gaps between them while the new fence has spindly pickets separated by gaps several times their width. It sounds like a minor change, but it has altered the tone of the night, so much do the thin pickets remind me of bleached bones.
There. Bleached bones in the moonlight. A perfect image with which to begin the year. Need I say more?
