Snaky [Sep. 19th, 2011|11:08 pm]

I saw what I thought was a worm in the garage, but on closer examination it turned to to be a baby snake. It was the type that is locally called a red racer, though I'm not sure that's what they actually are. We get a lot of these little red snakes around here, but I've never seen one in the garage before. This one was less than three inches long and only about a 16th of an inch in diameter, so it was probably not long out of the nest. They're usually no more than ten or twelve inches long as adults.

This baby was having a hard time getting a purchase on the cement floor, so it wriggled and wriggled but accomplished very little slithering. I finally picked it up and took it out to a spot on the lawn, next to the concrete device that borders the front walk. There was an adult snake of the same species living there last year, and I thought it might have left a burrow for the baby snake to crawl into, though I couldn't see any entrance hole. When I checked on it half an hour later the snake was gone, so either if found a way underground or it managed to slither off into the night. Good luck, little serpent.

I'm the St. Francis of my block!

(Except to the black widow spiders, ants, and mosquitoes, of course.)
